openSkin – opensource skin texture for secondLife

February 4th, 2010 Posted in Digital Art, Games, Modeling and Texturing

I’ve been working on a decent-quality (I hope) skin texture for SL, because I don’t think a lot of the textures on SL are worth what they’re sold for (especially skin textures).

They’re mapped using Robin Wood’s UV maps.

So, I’m giving these out for free, under two conditions: they cannot be resold, only redistributed free, and the readme.txt has to go with it. Or like, a note or something with the text if you’re redistributing it in-game.

Credit yourself first, obviously, but I’d like credit as the base artist.

Otherwise, you don’t need permission or any sort of contact with me — but if you do something really awesome and want it linked here, I’d be happy to do that for you!

Information and download link below:

Download PSDs

.rar file full of PSDs that are easily editable — if you’re only looking to change the skin tone, it can be done with the colour picker on the “solid colour” layers.

Download .pngs

Four skin textures saved as .png files, for those who don’t have a program that reads PSD files, or if you don’t want to bother with edits.

If you like what I’ve done, consider making a donation — it’ll keep the site running and more content coming!

Head texture

The very bottom layer – Color Fill 3 controls the skin tone. Double-clicking the thumbnail will bring up a colour picker, and you can choose a colour from there. I spent a lot of time getting the shading, etc to work with the widest range of light to dark skin tones, but because of the nature of the shading layers, “cool” skintones (more desaturated) end up looking more defined than warm ones.

In the lips folder – the lip_stain layer controls the colour of the lips. Any colour works, except absolute black and white (I would suggest a peachy off-white or dark plum as replacement instead, that way you still get the texture). If you want a natural look, bring up the colour picker and click around inside the image to pull colours from the actual image; the rosier parts around the cheeks and eyes work best. The gloss layer can be turned off or the opacity can be tweaked to control the shininess of the lips.

The eyebrows are set to soft light and overlay layers — they will more or less match the skin tones (darker on darker skin, lighter/blonder on paler skin). They can be set to other layer modes and altered, but this is a little more difficult.

Upper body texture

Again the very bottom layer can be changed to adjust the overall skin texture. The hex code in the colour picker can be matched to ensure that there’s the least amount of seam possible in between textures.

Nipples (oh my) – If you want an anatomically correct version, it’s available to you with its own colour picker to adjust the colour. Otherwise they can be turned off.

Arm lightening/tan lines – The underside of the arm and the palm of the hand have a layer above the main skin tone, to pale the skin and mimic where mealnin cannot be produced. The opacity of this layer can be altered, the colour adjusted, or it can just be turned off.

Lower body texture

This one is pretty simple — the only thing that needs to be adjusted for a basic edit is the bottom skin tone layer.

The bottom of the foot has a lightening layer, the same as the upper body texture. It can be adjusted the same way.

Coming soon will be a couple simple tutorials on how to add easy tattoos, makeup, and scars! Update: it’s here.

Hi. I treasured to drop you a quick note to impart my thanks. I’ve been observing your blog for a month or so and have picked up a heap of good information as well as enjoyed the way you’ve structured your site. I am attempting to run my own blog however I think its too general and I would like to focus more on smaller topics.
