art school problems
March 8th, 2010 Posted in My DayThe Art Institute
I’m sure you’ve seen me write about my time at the Art Institute.
I had great teachers who, because of the nature of the school, had to puppymill students through a curriculum that basically makes them unhireable. When my boyfriend had to look for designers to hire, there was just nobody worth anything from Ai. And those who were hireable were expecting completely unreasonable wages.
In fact, one kid applied for an unpaid internship. The interview went okay, but he ended it off with “my starting rate is 40k.” What?
They laughed him out of the office.
So, alright, I had learned what I could and was ready to move on to another school. The only problem was that because of how the Art Institute schedules their semesters, by the time I was out, I had nowhere else to go! Application deadlines were cut off across the board.
On a side-note, I hated Ai’s semester schedule. Eleven weeks on, two weeks off. Eleven weeks alone in Vancouver, two weeks with my boyfriend.

Alright, well, that’s over. I’ve been out of school for about a year — and my applications are all in again! Time to go back to school! Except… what’s that, Kev?
Your job is making us move to New York City? You just found out now, after the art schools there stop taking applicants?
Okay, I understand how this could sound whiny. Oh, boo hoo, Amy, looks like you’ll have to live in that dump they call Manhattan with paid living expenses. What a raw deal. Yeah, I know, and I’m psyched it’s NYC. The only problem is I can’t get a work visa unless I’m in school. And I can’t start school before next Spring unless I build myself a time machine, go back a few months, and send in some more applications.
I’m going to keep phoning around and try to see what I can get done about this. What a difficult thing. In all honesty, I’ll probably be back here in Vancouver.
I just want to go back to school!
